Review, Rating, and Release

Last year, Bollywood gifted us Fighter on Republic Day, showcasing brave Indian fighter pilots in their battles against Pakistan, highlighting camaraderie and patriotism. This year, Sky Force delivers a similar vibe, but this time it recreates a historic mission during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. The story follows a squadron that destroyed a fleet of advanced American jets stationed at Pakistan’s Sargodha base in an operation named Sky Force in the film. The tale revolves around a pilot, T Vijaya (real-life AB Devayya, played by Veer Pahariya), who defies orders, takes off in a plane deemed unfit for flight, and demonstrates extraordinary courage to save his fellow pilots. However, despite such a powerful premise, the film doesn’t quite do justice to this story of unparalleled bravery. Instead, Akshay Kumar, playing Wing Commander KO Ahuja (real-life counterpart OP Taneja), dominates the narrative, with Pahariya’s character often sidelined. From its start in 1971, where a captured Pakistani pilot (Sharad Kelkar) provides a clue about a missing pilot, to its flashbacks of the 1965 war, the movie covers strategic war-room sequences, uniformed airmen, aerial dogfights, and Ahuja’s relentless quest to uncover the truth. While avoiding excessive jingoism, it still includes lines like ‘ghar mein ghus ke maarna.’ Kelkar’s character is given depth with hints of nobility, showcasing familial values despite being an enemy.

Female characters remain confined to domestic roles, with Nimrat Kaur and Sara Ali Khan as supportive wives. Though the background score amplifies the dogfights, the overall melodrama is restrained. Akshay appears noticeably older in the flashbacks, though he shines as a grizzled commander. Surprisingly, the most poignant moment isn’t from the leads but from another comrade, reminding us of the ethos of “never leaving anyone behind.” ( 3 Reasons Why Veer Pahariya Should Lead in Sky Force )
