Swara Bhasker was in the news this past week after her photo with Maulana Sajjad Nomani provoked online backlash. The actress was called out for ‘double standards’ as the Muslim cleric previously sparked controversy over his views on women’s rights. While some slammed her for meeting the cleric, others began trolling her and her choice of attire that they deemed ‘conservative’.
Taunting the star about her ‘feminism’ advocacy, many shared photos of her choice of attire ‘before and after’ marrying Fahad Ahmad. The photos implied that she wore more revealing outfits before marriage and began covering up and wearing a dupatta on her head, after marriage.
In a sharp response to online trolls, actor Swara addressed criticism of her wardrobe choices. Known for her outspoken personality, the star took to her social media handle to call out the stereotypical expectations being imposed on her and her husband. “I didn’t realise my wardrobe choices post marriage are a national cyber debate (bizarre!)…) she wrote.
Sharing some recent photos of herself from her maternity shoot and her time at home with her baby girl, Swara added, “Here are more pics of me post marriage to give Sanghi vermin more fodder for dung I’m sorry @FahadZirarAhmad doesn’t fit your stereotype of a conservative Muslim husband. Lol!”
This is not the first time Bhasker has faced online scrutiny. A vocal advocate for social justice and gender equality, she has often been at the centre of social media debates, particularly for her outspoken views on politics and her personal life.
Bhasker’s response garnered support from her fans and colleagues in the film industry, who took to the comments section and wrote, “stay strong”.
Meanwhile, Bhasker also took to her handle to share photos from a recent political rally where she joined Fahad and wrote, “Campaign mode for the last 21 days.. it’s been a whirlwind and an education like no other!! Thank you to the wonderful people of #AnushaktiNagar who opened their hearts to us and showered us with so much affection.”
The actor married Fahad Ahmad in a court ceremony last year and welcomed daughter Raabiya later that same year.
